Bron is away today, so Anth is swimming solo. The weather is 22 and fine (much shorter this week).

The impact of sonar on whales was the topic of the news. A US judge has delayed a sonar deployment in the US due to the potential of some impact on whales. Seisemic exploration seems to have an impact on mating - imagine whispering in somones ear and having AC/DC start up mid-sentence

Green Cape - mid way between Sydney and Melborne is a well kept scret. The Cathedral and the Gutter are two really good spots, with fantastic camping and few others.

Eden - if you don't want to take the BMW off the tarmac, then Eden will give you some good diving. Follow the pylons out from the chip mill to see life galore. Leonards Island is another great spot - just north of Eden - the island is connected to the mainland at low tide.

Tathra - Good diving, check out the wharf and it has good infrastructure in case the diving is awful

Brett will come back to do the rest of NSW in the near future.

The HMAS Cerberus is a key part of Melbourne history, and part of the arms race of 100 years ago when submarines, gun technology and Monitor class ships. Both the Russians and the Americans entered the Bay (nothing happened luckily).

Heritage Victoria are working to try and save the deck of the remains of the ship. From next week people may see a piling barge down there to try and determine what is needed to save this piece of Victorian history. For more details, follow the link.

The HMAS Goorangai was a mine sweeper was the second Australian ship lost in WWII (60 years ago on November 20th), when she collided with a military passenger ship (the Duntroon) and is now resting in the south channel. It is a great dive site. The 60th anniversary is on Nov 20th and will be celebrated at the Queenscliff Maritime Centre.

Mac was on the bridge of the Canberra when it was attacked at 1:43 am by a range of Japanese suface ships. After a direct hit on the bridge, killing the majority of the command, ther ship started to list and sink. It appears the final step that crippled the ship was an American torpedo. 84 Australians were lost, with over 1000 US servicemen dying in the attack on the fleet. It was an horrific battle in WWII and has lead to the area being known as Iron Bottom Sound, due to the sheer volume of naval ships sunk.

In honour of the Canberra's role in the battle, the US named a ship the USS Canberra. When the ship was broken up, Mac arranged for the bell to come back to Australia - it has special significance to him as his son was christianed in the bell.

The bell was persented back to Australia on September 10 2001 in Washinton by President George W Bush in a ceremony attended by Mac.
