A special hello
to those of you who are listening to us on the web.
The Courier
Mail in Brisbane carried a large item by a Senior Marine scientist
(Prof Ove Hoegh-Guldberg) entering a public debate about the validity
of science. The scientist was responding to a think tank report
that said there was no demonstrated impact of run-off into the Great
Barrier Reef. Who should we believe - the political hobbyist and
his insect expert, industry funded scientist, or the body of work
produced by scientists over years as their full time day job - you
decide.

Cape Gantheon
is the most accessable seal colony - but is still a place where
you have to carry your own fridge in. A typical day in summer involves
looking at the seals from a distance (through a telescope) to try
and spot the small tags from a few hundred metres - easy !!
In winter it
gets more fun - they catch the females and tag them - lots of hiding
behind rocks, sprinting and netting them.
The study on
site is to look at the population demographics on site. It is growing
at about 20% per year, doubling every 4 years. This has caused concerns
for the fishing industry, who see this as a threat to their industry,
as the population returns to a normal level.

The true
story of the mad heretic who led history's bloodiest mutiny.
The spice trade ships were worth about $100 M in todays money and
paid for themselves in 12 months. On the Batavia's first and last
voyage, there is a plan for a mutiny hatched. On the way to execution
of the plan, the ship runs aground. That caused the Mutineers to
change their plan.
The plan changes
to killing off everyone that is a potential threat to them taking
over the rescuse ship so that they can get the cash. Of the 300
survivers, half were killed over an 8 week timeframe.
What happended
when the rescuse ship arrived - get the book to find out. Dave gave
it 4 seastars out of a possible five.

ATA
used to stand for Alternative Technology Association. Tidal power
is about trying to harness the energy from the gross changes in
water level driven by the tides. Wave power is much more about capturing
the energy from the small, regular rise and fall from waves.
Because of the
small tidal ranges in Victoria it is not likely to catch on here,
but are being considered for the large tidal range in WA.
The environmental
impact is where the discussion gets interesting. The impact of the
technology on the nevionment needs to be balanced against the environmental
benefits of the use of the renewable energy.
