Police in Bali have arrested a gang of fish bombers, who have been using explosives. This seems like a milestone, where explosives and cyanide fishing have long been practiced.

Thousands of starfish have beached themselves (or been washed ashore) in the UK - The sanctuary manager stated that "it has nothing to do with pollution and global warming - its just a freak of nature."

Recently the US Navy has admitted that its explosions have an impact on whales - the damage to whales ears may well be contributing to strandings.

Marine Discovery Centres is running its holiday program again, starting 2 April. Call (03) 52583344 for more information.

The legislation is back - The Government is saying that Marine National Parks will be established by November 2002. The major differences between this legislation and the version last year are:

  • Two of the parks that were taken out from the ECC report were put back in (Cape Howe and Ricketts Point as a marine sanctuary).
  • The ability to seek compensation for those commercial fishers that can demonstrate an economic impact.
  • No Section 85 exemption in the Constitution.

The compensation has a two panel process (including review) and the abalone industry gets a separate $13 M package to reduce poaching. They have also removed the constitutional right to appeal to the Supreme Court - good for maintaining a decent democratic process.

Bells had an ugly day yesterday, but great today - but the tournament is still on schedule. Round 2 should be completed today, with the event finishing late in the week. Gary Dunne, the Media Director for Rip Curl joined us on the line to explain the format:

Round 1- everyone surfs and the winners go to round 3
Round 2- the losers surf off against each other to move to round 3
Round 3 - it gets interesting - one on one elimination to the finals

Anth, Justin and Dave then practiced their sports psychology on an number of the contestants. It was not pretty - it seemed that the younger guys seem to have bypassed much of the sports science - they just go out there and love it, and they end up being very good at it.
