Barry Hayden is a Marine
Planner in Victoria's West and of our western most park -
about 20 km west of Portland. It was named Discovery Bay by the explorer looking
for Victoria, kind of forgetting the indigenous people had already found it. It
is an important area because of the basalt reefs, cultural values, dunes, coastal
cliffs and a fair amount of visiting wildlife like whales, great whites and fur
seals. The great
south West walk is a great way to see the park, it follows the land boundary.
You are up above the water in the cliffs, walk past middens, see Gannets, seals
and hooded pluvers nesting. The
diving is great, but very exposed so pick the right conditions, and the surfing
is great for the experienced surfer, but just walking the tracks is a great way
of getting the full southern ocean experience Head
down and stay in Bridgewater, Portland or the many B and B's in Bridgewater Bay. For
