The Age yesterday had an interesting article on abalone poaching in the Good Weekend. It appeared to glamorise the illegal industry without really drawing the link between that and the other glamorous crimes like drug dealing !

David has seen his first even giant squid - a giant squid larva on the TV show in search of the Giant squid. Even the larvae were big. And don't get us started about the Phonecian mahogany ship bringing olives to Australia...

If you want to attend a seminar on the ethics of Archaeology esp in the marine area, then email Sanjeev Vello (with "Archaeology Seminar" in the subject line or call on 9905 2124). The seminar is on May 15th from 10am until 3pm and covers many facets of the ethics of maritime archaeology.

 

The Industry Council is working to help the reestablishment on the Indonesian and Sri Lankan fishing industry. The key issue is that the industries work quite different in the different countries so the effort has gone into understanding how they want to fish, and then collect or obtain what is required to help them. This has made the process a bit slow - but accurate.

Fish labeling is a continuing issue. The Industry Council is trying initially to label the country of origin - so that the consumer can make an informed choice between the local product, and potentially the lower priced imported product passed of at a higher margin - costing the consumer money.

It is warming up nicely and things are flat but not clear in the bay. It is still not flat outside the bay. The mating of the spider crabs is a bit spectacular - a pile about a metre high and cover hundereds of square metres.
