The
weather report left a lot to be desired. Bron come back.
When
do we as a society get the idea that carbon emissions are serious
- an extraordinary decision this week was that Hazelwood power station
has been given a long new lease. It is a carbon dirty power station
and the Govt claims we need it to maintain our lifestyles and cheap
electricity. When do we change our approach to power and climate
change?

In October 2004,
Paul published an article in the Inquirer that described, to an
almost uncanny accuracy, the impacts of Hurricane Katrina on New
Orleans. That was right down to the rough number of people who would
could evacuate, the mechanism of the flooding and the impacts on
business. He noted that there was very little reaction to the story
initially, even the bit about the request for $4m to work out what
to do about it. Shame the Government didn't provide the money.

Coastal development
- growth on the coast to help local government cope with the seachange
generation.
One of the issues
is the ability of local government to make consistent decisions
- which sees them struggling to complete their own plans for areas
- when developers turn up with proposals that play to the local
community desires. It is not helped by councils changing on short
electoral cycles
In addition,
the local infrastructure in of sewage and water have not been designed
for the the growth and dynamics of the population in the coastal
communities. The majority of people at our coast are transient,
many not contribute to the environment

David, Dave,
Tony and Susan all made valid comments about the things Diane James
had to say about coastal development - some positive and some negative.
