The Marine Discovery has had one hell of a wild ride this week. At the beginning of the week they issued a press release announcing their closure. By Thursday, the Government had committed an extra $100,000 per year to save it. Well done to the Friends of group and the local members. Can anyone else smell an election?

Next Saturday at the Rainbow (2:00 - 6:00pm) there is a fundraiser for the Save Bastion Point Campaign (a wide range of community groups). The issue of the construction of a breakwater has divided the community and passions run high on both sides.

Off the West Papuan Coast, two expeditions found 50 new species of marine life in the coral triangle. They include a shark that walks on it fins, a mantis shrimp and a flashing wrasse. A stack of coral was also found - 75% of the worlds coral species have been found in this area. The area has 50% more coral building species than the barrier reef.

At one site over 330 new species were found.

Now that they have been found, there is a risk that they will be wiped out - typically by cyanide and dynamite fishing !!! Which will be the first species voted off the planet?

Kids from all over Australia to run 40 min workshops to teach other kids about the Australian coastal environment. Each group presents twice, and the presentation must cover all types of learning and skill levels. The conference also involves physically exploring the bay as well as talking about it. Attendees are coming from all over Australia and even New Zealand. The conference is on Oct 15 - 18th and is completely sold out !
