Tangaroa is the God of the Sea. The God is the energy of the water, be it calm and life giving though to dangerous and destructive. It is the source and foundation of all life. Islands are fish drawn up from the water and people evolved from amphibians. Check out carvings (stolen from Tangaroa) to see these ancestral creatures.

The half man, half God being called Maui was a fiend. He is the last of 5 brothers (all called Maui) and his is know for a number of acts. The best one was to fish up the North Island of New Zealand (Te Ika a Maui - or fish of Maui) using an enchanted hook baited with the blood from his own nose. He also slowed the sun down to make the days longer (basically by beating it up) and stole fire from the Gods.

Dave gave this Allen and Unwin publication 5 seastars - amazing ! The book is a reflection and interpretation of his life, the impact he has had on the world and on his family. A great read !
