Happy Sea Week 2007...

Bron is away today but Anth, Pete and Angeline were in for a big natter.

News of the day - submissions are open on the world's biggest salt mine planned for near Exmouth. It is enormous! Check out Halt the Salt for info and to do your own submission. Just because it's a long way away, does it mean we should let destruction on that scale happen?

The woman who smuggle in 51 exotic tropical fish in her skirt 2 years ago got sentenced this week - 9 month sentence to be served in the community. Not a good look that skirt.

'Dolphins Behaving Badly' and 'Jack the Flipper'
Many people are nervous swimming around sharks but what about dolphins? Television programs such as Flipper have conditioned us into believing that dolphins as loveable creatures. Dolphins are often referred to as “charismatic megafauna” but they have a more sinister side and are not always the friendly playmates we expect them to be.

Dolphin attacks, both in captivity and the wild, have resulted in serious injuries and even death. Angeline asked “Was Harold Holt was surrounded by dolphins on the morning he disappeared?”

Attacks discussed included:
1. A woman was injured by a leaping dolphin while vacationing in the Bahamas suffered a neck injury and hearing loss during what was supposed to be a thrilling swim with the famously gentle mammals.

2. A man was treated for injuries after he jumped into a tank with a mother dolphin and her baby. Twit!

3. A 7-year-old boy who suffered a bruised thumb was the second child in 2 months to be bitten by a dolphin at a marine park attraction in Florida .

4. An enraged dolphin is terrorising the French Atlantic coast, attacking boats and knocking fishermen into the sea.

5. A woman, sitting on the bow of the boat was struck by a dolphin that jumped into the boat she was travelling in. The dolphin had been leaping out of the water on the bow wave when it landed on the woman in the boat.

In late December 2006 before they left for the Antartic, Capt Paul Watson joined us in the studio to talk about what they planned to do... and other things. We know what happened so it is work to plan?

There is just so much going on.

Check out Sea Week 2007 - as MESA says on their website: "The theme for Seaweek 2007 is "Marine Bycatch Matters" and aims to raise awareness of the bycatch issues facing our marine environment and the steps Australian fishers are taking to minimise and manage bycatch." There is stuff on around the country including Victorian events.

Check out some Australian stats on by-catch from State of Environment Report 2006. It's sobering...

Brett reckoned it was not too bad out there today. But yesterday was the pick of the days - clear and clean on the outer coast - flat as a tack.
