State of the World

A three way panel discussion with the respected elders of ocean and
conservation.

The Participants

Dr Sylvia Earle
Dr David Bellamy
Dr David Suzuki

Marine National Parks - as the legislation is looking to be reintroduced into Parliament, the three luminaries discussed the benefits and issues around Marine Parks. We are totally dependent on the oceans for our survival on this planet, and if the ocean is in trouble so are we. The three gurus indicated that the evidence was out there to show the benefits, the strong critic's overseas - the fishermen have become some of the strongest advocates.

People power - The panel said that they have seen changes in the community perceptions and the attitude of Government and Industry during their distinguished careers.

"I always thought the three of us would ride up on our white horses and say we are taking over - not that any of us would want the job" - David Bellamy

Where is the change happening - While they initially didn't think a book could be filled with good news, David Suzuki thinks they could have done it several times over. While the Governments say they don't have the money, they put a large amount of money into companies as subsidies. $US 54 billion subsidies go into the fishing industry in the US each year alone - imagine if that money went into the environment.

"All we have to do is stir the pot - if people move, then Governments will follow."

Is corporate sustainability an oxymoron ? - The link between the economy and the environment is becoming understood as the flip sides of each other - like two sides of the same coin.

The recognition that we are part of nature, and if we do not recognise it, the basis of the economy will be undermined.

The economy is currently disconnected from the environment - only 3% of the money traded daily relates to productive enterprise.
